Broadway Bridge Replacement Completed Weeks Ahead of Schedule

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) reopened the Broadway Bridge in downtown Nashville to all lanes of traffic two weeks ahead of schedule.

With an original completion date of October 31, crews reopened the road Tuesday night. The contractor, Kiewit Corporation, used accelerated bridge techniques and alternative delivery methods which shortened the project length to one year rather than the standard three to four years a project of this magnitude would require.

“This is a shining example of how alternative delivery works when applied to the right projects. It was a complex job with many stakeholders and needed to be done quickly,” said TDOT Commissioner Butch Eley. “It’s about having the right tools for the right job and the passage of Governor Lee’s Transportation Modernization Act gives TDOT the authority to deliver more projects this way saving taxpayers time and money.”

Some small “punch list” items of work remain on and around the bridge, but to celebrate the early, on-budget completion of the project, TDOT held a ribbon-cutting ceremony this afternoon. Governor Lee, Commissioner Eley, and other state and local officials were in attendance.

BRIDGE CLOSURE

The Broadway Bridge was closed July 7 until September 8, 2023.

It was closed from 8th Avenue to 13th Avenue. Eleventh Avenue will also be closed from Porter Street to McGavock Street.

During the 8-week closure the bridge was totally replaced. It was partially reopened in September returning it to its narrowed configuration of two lanes open in each direction. Crews then tackled final items like sidewalk construction, bridge railing and lighting until the contracted project completion date of Oct. 31, 2023.

Drivers were encouraged to utilize Demonbreun St. and Church Street as a primary detour route around the closure. TDOT worked with NDOT, Metro Police and other participating stakeholders to monitor the detour route and manage traffic accordingly.

Project Overview

The project along State Route 1 (US 431) consists of replacing the bridge, also known as the Broadway Viaduct, that crosses over 11th Avenue and the CSX Railroad in downtown Nashville, Davidson County.

Purpose and Need

Broadway is an urban principal arterial. Built in 1948, the existing Broadway Viaduct, the structure crossing over 11th Avenue and the CSX Railroad, is showing signs of deterioration and needs to be replaced.

The purpose of the project is to replace the existing structure.

Bridge Rendering

Design

The existing structure is approximately 700 feet long and 98 feet wide. It’s comprised of structural steel beams and support columns. The roadway consists of six 10-foot travel lanes (three in each direction) and one 12-foot center turn lane and 10-foot sidewalks.

The replacement structure will remain on the same alignment and general width of the existing structure. It will be comprised of steel girders and support columns. The roadway will maintain six 10-foot travel lanes (three in each direction) an 8-foot striped median with one-foot shoulders, curb and gutter, and 11-foot 8-inch sidewalks, which includes space for aesthetic features like planters on both sides of the roadway.

The additional space will allow for planters to be placed on the sidewalk, separating vehicular and pedestrian traffic. The design includes the possibility for connections to future development in the area.

Project Delivery

The project is located along the heavily traveled Broadway corridor, an important route to traffic flow in and out of downtown Nashville. It is also in close proximity to developments, historic sites, and active CSX rail lines. In an effort to reduce construction impacts, accelerated bridge construction techniques and alternative delivery methods are being considered.
